Subject: FundEd100% and keep our students and educators healthy and safe so that their promise for tomorrow isn’t sacrificed in the fear and uncertainty of today.

Dear Legislator,

As a constituent, I urge you fund public education 100% and to maintain the utmost care when dealing with the health and safety of our students and the educators that serve them.

The uncertainty of these challenging times has a profound impact on both the mental and physical well-being of all involved in the education of our students, particularly those that are the most vulnerable.  We, as a state, need to take a comprehensive look at how to address those concerns and it begins with having a fully staffed education system, necessary counseling and support where needed, and communities in which their public schools are a refuge of learning, confidence and stability.

We cannot allow the doubts of today to wash a generation of New Mexico’s students away while we “figure things out.”  We need to invest in training all educators the best practices around keeping themselves and their students safe.  We need to invest in adequate pay so that already financially strapped educators are not looking to exit the profession.  This psychological impact of financial insecurity steeps down to our students in so many ways.  We need to invest in our students by making their public schools a healthy and safe environment that excites them about learning.  This can’t be done when we are looking at ways to “spread the pain”.  Unfortunately, those pains cannot simply be erased when we return to a more “normalized” setting.

The time is now to take care of the health and safety for all of NM’s students and educators with a full understanding of the dire consequences if we don’t.  Let’s not look back and wish we had steered a different course to our future prosperity.  It is the youth of today that will also look back and decide what or who mattered most.  They are relying on us to prioritize correctly, so please vote in favor of any measures that keep our students and staff both safe and healthy.

Sincerely,

Call your legislator and tell him/her that the health and safety of our students and educators cannot be compromised.

“Tell Congress to support students, our educators, and your schools.” TAKE ACTION!

As part of national legislative package, NEA is pushing Congress to help narrow the digital divide and close the “homework gap”—the inability to do schoolwork at home due to lack of internet access. Nationwide, as many as 12 million students are affected—roughly 1 in 5. A disproportionate share of those students are African-American, Hispanic, live in rural areas, or come from low-income families. NEA supports the Emergency Educational Connections Act, which would provide up to $4 billion for a special fund, administered by the Federal Communications Commission’s E-Rate program, to equip students to do schoolwork at home during the COVID-19 national emergency.
